Object Lock retention cost calculator
A backup under S3 Object Lock is stored, and billed, until its lock ends. Lock every hourly backup for 30 days and you pay for 720 copies at once. Enter your backup size and schedule to see how many copies you hold, what they cost, and what daily, weekly and monthly tiers save.

How it counts
Each backup is locked for the longest tier it falls in. The first backup of each UTC day is
kept for the daily tier, the first of each ISO week for the weekly tier, and the first of
each month for the monthly tier. Every other backup is kept for the first number. These are
the rules SafeGrd's retention_days, keep_daily,
keep_weekly and keep_monthly settings follow
(Storage and retention).
The calculator plays out two years of backups and averages how many are held at once, so month lengths and week boundaries count as they fall. It models full database dumps, where every backup is a complete copy. File trees back up incrementally and store far less.
Prices and minimum storage periods
| Storage | List price | Minimum billed period |
|---|---|---|
| AWS S3 Standard | $0.023 per GB a month, first 50 TB, US East | None |
| Backblaze B2 | $6.95 per TB a month | None |
| Wasabi | $7.99 per TB a month, pay as you go | 90 days |
Prices were checked on 3 October 2026 and change by region and over time, so edit the price for your own bill. A minimum billed period matters most with short locks: on Wasabi, an hourly backup locked for 2 days is billed as if it were kept for 90.
Lock length is set when each backup is written and can never be shortened, so a mistake costs money until the last lock ends. Try a short lock on a small database first, and read Immutable backups with S3 Object Lock for compliance and governance modes.
